José Manuel Barbeito Varela 

José Manuel Barbeito Varela is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). His research focuses mainly on identity and subjectivity in the English literary tradition. Along this line, he has published on writers such as Milton, Swift, Austen, W. B. Yeats, James Joyce, or Salman Rushdie. He has authored titles like Las Brönte y su mundo (2006), El individuo y el mundo moderno: el drama de la identidad en siete clásicos de la literatura británica (2004). He has edited In Mortal Shakespeare. Radical Readings (1989), Paradise Lost: The Word, the words, the world (1991); Modernity, Modernism, Postmodernism (2000); Feminism, Aesthetics and Subjectivity: Essays on Women and Culture in Early Twentieth Century British Literature (2001); and coedited the volume National Identities and European Literatures (2008). Outside the field of English Studies, he has published the chapter “Spanish and Spanish-American Poetics and Criticism,” in Cambridge History of Literary Criticism, vol. IX (2001). He currently studying the work of Alain Badiou and has written ‘Derrida, Badiou, and the Possibilities and Limits of Spectrality’ (accepted for publication in Badiou Studies). Barbeito Varela has also coordinated various research projects and organized multiple conferences and seminars that have gathered leading scholars in the field of critical theory.
